All Look the Same?

My sister Tami sent me this message the other day:

"This is an interesting quiz on whether you can tell Chinese, Japanese and Koreans apart from their faces. It's put together by a Japanese-American guy who took these pictures of nonmixed Asians in NY... you have to register, but can put any fake details down. I got a pretty low score."

I went to the site thinking, "Oh, I'm half Asian, it will be no problem for me!" Ha!

I did not just get a low score, I got an extremely low score. I think the evaluation of my score was something like, "Obviously you can't tell the difference." Very bad.

So I asked whitey-white Scottish-German descent Cooper to take the quiz. Wouldn't you know it, he scored better than I did. He got more of the Koreans right, for sure. He said, "I have some cousins that were adopted from Korea, so I put 'Korean' on anyone that looked like any of them." Ahhh - you see, I was going off the stereotype that Koreans have strong, squarish jaws. None of these Koreans seemed to have that.

I also thought one girl was Chinese who turned out to be Japanese. That was a bummer; I was so sure I'd gotten that one right since she looked just like Beverly, my Chinese friend. : )

Anyway, it was sort of fun to do the quiz. I think I must be bad with faces generally, however. In Italy many of the Italians look the same to me, too. I have to be careful not to introduce myself to someone I've already been introduced to. Whoops!

So, let me know if you take the quiz and get a good score. I'll be so impressed.

I confess, I'm afraid to try! One of my jokes to my friends is that "We all look the same." I don't know if that's because I simply "don't really want to see" the differences, thinking it shouldn't matter, or if I'm just not paying close enough attention. Hmmm... I'll let you know whether or not I get brave enough to try it out.

well, it turns out that I'm "hopeless" and scored a measly 5 out of 18 points! yikes!

Scored a 9, which make me just OK. Have a great holiday!

Well, Trina, I'm down in your range. Pretty hopeless indeed.

Bruce - a 9! Wow! I'm so impressed! You beat Cooper by 1!

Kimi - Tell Tami that was a hilarious post! She probably doesn't remember me, but I remember her. This is such a funny topic. I thought I had a chance to score well and choked big time - 7 :o(

I'm glad to see everyone enjoyed this quiz. Also glad to see others doing as poorly as I did-- I only got a 5. :( My white friend Jonathan, who originally sent me the link, admitted to scoring a 7, which he said was the worst in his company.

Other reports:
My Japanese friend (from Japan) took the quiz three times and reported scores of 11, 12, and 10.

My Korean-American friend took the quiz with me looking over his shoulder. He muttered the whole time while taking it, starting with: "wait, this isn't fair; they're making weird faces; how am I supposed to tell-" and progressing to: "I have no idea; now I'm just trying to pick a roughly equal number of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese." Well, after all that, he ended up scoring a 12, and hasn't stopped crowing about it since.
